Growing Up and Learning to Work
Tom grew up in Dearborn, Michigan, as one of seven children in a poor, working-class family. Work became part of his life at an early age. One job he remembers fondly was setting pins at a neighborhood bowling alley when he was only ten or eleven years old. He even needed his own Social Security card for the job.
Those childhood jobs did more than provide spending money. Tom writes that they taught him the value of hard work, the dignity of earning his own way, and the importance of helping his family whenever possible. These were lessons that remained with him long after childhood.
Sports were another important part of his early years. He played baseball and later became especially interested in football. During his senior year, his high school football team went undefeated, and several colleges contacted him about possible scholarships.
A Different Road Forward
Tom had his heart set on Arizona State University and believed he had earned a football scholarship there. He even began planning his future around that opportunity. But when another player changed his mind and accepted the scholarship, Tom’s plans changed as well.
His life eventually took him into the U.S. Air Force. Military service became another important part of the road that ultimately led him toward education, politics, and Washington.
The political events of the 1960s also had a lasting influence on him. Tom recalls how his interest in politics developed and how events around the country transformed that interest into a passion. While stationed in Germany in 1963, he experienced the shock of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination from thousands of miles away.
Politics Becomes Personal
By 1968, politics was no longer simply something Tom followed from a distance. He became involved in Robert F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign in Indiana.
That experience exposed him to the realities of political organization and voting. Tom was among the Kennedy volunteers assigned to polling places to make sure voters could enter voting booths alone and cast their ballots without intimidation. Kennedy ultimately won the Indiana primary.
Tom was also deeply affected by the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy’s appearance in Indianapolis that evening. His memories of those events became part of a political education that would stay with him throughout his life.
Arriving in Washington
Tom arrived in Washington in December 1968. One of his first challenges was finding work on Capitol Hill, and his experience quickly introduced him to the unusual ways the city operated.
Fortunately, Congressman John Dingell helped him secure a political appointment with the Congressional Research Service at the Library of Congress. Tom answered research requests from congressional offices, giving him an introduction to Capitol Hill and the inner workings of Congress.
That opportunity also began one of the most meaningful friendships of his life. John Dingell eventually became a dear friend, as did his wife, Debbie Dingell.
A Life He Had Never Imagined
Tom’s career continued to grow. He became a congressional staff member and later a lawyer and lobbyist, spending nearly sixty years in the nation’s capital helping shape and influence federal public policy.
Years after his modest beginnings, he found himself flying home to Michigan aboard Air Force One with President Bill Clinton. Even Tom admits there were times when he found it difficult to believe how far life had taken him.
That contrast lies at the heart of Jolly Times in Washington. Tom’s story moves from childhood jobs and football fields to Capitol Hill and decades in Washington, but throughout the journey, friendship, hard work, politics, and the people he met remain at the center of his memories.
